As we continue to grow here at Wisconsin Collector Car we have now added a new ads system to the forum. We have done this to further improve the site and generate money so we can have paid advertising and generate more traffic and new users. This will keep the forum growing and bring some new faces around to join in discussions. Do you find these ads overly annoying and so much so that you don’t want to be on the forum? Or considering what they will be used for (making the forum bigger) are they okay and you’re fine with having them on here?

    Please let us know!!

I’m kinda neutral on it. I’d prefer no banners but I it doesn’t really bother me.

G-Man, I find them extremely annoying. It will not stop me from participating and posting, but I strongly dislike them. I used to spend a great deal of time with another forum, the Vintage Mustang Forum, and now I only lurk and check in occasionally. The main reason was because of the “commercialization” of the forum.

And, a final thought from me on this subject. Sometimes, bigger does not necessarily end up being better. I agree with you that growth would be good for the forum, but not when you have to take a second seat to advertisers, pop ups, embedded bots, and spyware that could be downloaded from the banner ads and advertisers. I will apologize in advance for my candor and bluntness on this subject.

    Marshall,

Thank you for being so open and honest about this, its very important that we know everyone’s real opinion on this!! I agree that there is definitely a difference between “commercialized” and “home-made” (for lack of a better word). We want to keep away from the annoying commercial aspect, but at the same time we don’t want the forum to die, where there is no activity. Tracking our statistics we haven’t noticed any increase (in fact a decrease) in traffic and interest over the last few months (not including this latest posting craze to reach the 20,000th mark).

As for popups, popunders, bots, spyware, ect ect ect – We will never allow such junk to be used on this site – with the ads that we have now (which we are going to adjust after this poll depending on the results) are just the banner that you see, nothing more. We have control over which ads appear and so we can choose which to allow.

One final question, what is more annoying to you – just having the advertisement (any kind) or the fact that it is an image? Would it be much better and less annoying if it was a text ad?

    Thanks Marshall

Garibaldi – isn’t there a way to format the ad bars to the bottom of the screen in the footer files?

Maybe that would be a good alternative and would be less intrusive but still stay on the site?

Yes that is a good point, we have been considering this. We wanted to see what the CPC (number of clicks) would be if they are at the top. As of today after 300 impressions that number is 0, so obviously its not any big advantage having them on the top.

Marshall, what do you think of the ads now at the very bottom, you can ignore them quite easily yet they still grab the pageloads

I also prefer it at the bottom of the page.

Yes, placing them at the bottom would be a great compromise. They would still be there, but no so intrusive.

    Thanks for the suggestions!!!

I’m glad we could find a good compromise! Thanks for the feedback!

They don’t bother me either, but seeing them at the bottom of the page is appreciated. There is nothing worse then going to a website full of pop ups you have to wade through before you can get to what you actually want to see. Keep up the good work!

Glad to hear it. Also just to clarify for everyone one the site:

We will never put popup windows or popunder windows on this site, those are so annoying we want to keep the site high quality and user friendly
