See You Down The Road

After many years serving the classic car community, Wisconsin Collector Car will be shutting down at the end of 2024. Thank you for all of the car show memories!

Do you think we’ll ever go to autopiloted cars? I could see the POTENTIAL for it to happen with a combination of robotics, gps, and wifi style networking for programming routes. Plus auto sensors for collision detection and the like.

But I don’t think we’ll ever lose the urge to do the driving ourselves.

The movie MINORITY REPORT was crazy. It showed a fully automated driving system in like only thirty years. First of all I don’t think a city wide system like that is feasible in that short of a time frame. Also I don’t think the public at large would be ready to just give up driving.

I mean what about the saying “freedom of the open road”??? Thats a big part of driving is being in control yourself. Sure you have traffic laws to obey but aside from having enough gas in the tank you can go anywhere anytime, anyway – within reason of course (but you can always do the “slightly above the limit” driving).

I just think we’re all too independently minded to ever fully go to a automated driving system. Now a automated public transit service would be feasible and possible with dedicated routes and fixed vehicles.

I seem to recall a recent headline that said a (so called) fool proof driverless system had been developed. I’ll have to see if I can find it again.

I very much doubt it on the current road system but there may be long stretches of special roads that guide specific cars. It’s been on TV before where there were around 6 cars driving along a new centre road in between an old motorway

We could, someday, but you’d have a hard time persuading me to drop my driving completely. I’d love to tell my car to go from Bath to Scotland and just chill/sleep while it does the hard work, but then again I enjoy driving my car.

I can’t abide cars that interfere with my driving. Even the Micra I drive does – the clutch is damped, steering damped and every time you want to do something the car computer has to consider and OK it before it does very much. Hell, I don’t even like automatic gearboxes. It’s my car, and I’m the driver. I know what’s best, not it. Grrrr…. :sozo: 😉

Yes the fun of driving is something that I wouldn’t want to give up – although I could see this being very useful for longer roadtrips – you could make it there faster and sleep while the car drives

A self-driving car that I could sleep in all the way on the overnight journey from the south of England to the Highlands of Scotland. One can only dream… and then hit a tree.

Yeah that would be my main use for it – except for the tree part! w00t.gif

We already have driverless cars. The drivers are too busy talking on the phone,
putting on makeup, shaving, messing with their computer, reading the
    paper, etc.

For those people there already is a driverless car… It’s called a bus! icon_cheesygrin.gif
