My main garage has a radiant gas heater that the
    previous owner installed.

It’s garbage. The fumes will knock you out and you freeze
unless you stand directly in front of it.

The ideal heater would be a vented gas furnace.

I use a 240 volt 5600 watt electric heater and it works great.
The main garage is 28 x 32 and it’s insulated so the electric
heater is perfect. It also has a separate power line from
    the street.

I vented the furnace for the house into the garage(which is part of the lower level). Just one vent is all I needed.

In CA the question would be “How do you cool your garage?”

If I were heating my garage (if I’m ever lucky enough to have one) I would use fire. Obviously. :)
