I think thats a brillant idea!! I don’t know how many high end luxo cars have this option but it makes a ton of sense. Just imagine you could probably upgrade it to as large of a harddrive as you want!

Imagine having a 500gb harddrive in your car and all of your cd collection in uncompressed wav files!!! that would be sweet. Do they have aftermarket kits for your existing cars??? I’d love to have that integrated with the radio so you could pause the mp3 when you switch to the am/fm radio – or maybe they’ll starting having hd radio as standard???

Anyway – I’d be interested in seeing how you’d dub to the harddrive. USB would make the most sense. But I would like the ability to put it on dvd/cd and simply rip to the harddrive.

    EDIT – http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060622/AUTO01/606220390

Thats the link for the article in the Detroit News. It also mentions it has bluetooth capability – maybe wifi next???

Bluetooth or WiFi would make even more sense, being able to update it from your computer without hooking up any codes

    Umm…
The head unit I speak of (MEX-1GP) has a gig of internal flash memory, an IPOD/MP3 hook up and a CD player that reads MP-3’s… so yeah it has room.
But my buddy was telling me Alpine has a few models that have card readers built in, so you can buy a gig or 2 flash card and just plug that in.

Here is the link to the Sony model.

We didn’t have all of this new-fangled technocrap in cars 40 years ago,
    and we didn’t need it!!

Everybody had an AM radio with pushbuttons. In my area ALL of the
car radios were set to one station. Everywhere you went you would
    hear the same station!!

Back then things were simple, fun and REAL. icon_applause.gif

I don’t miss the old AM radio because I like having a CD player, but
    back then it was great.

Also don’t forget the town and country buttons, for adjusting the radio depending on where you’re driving

Wow… that is old skool right their.
Do you realize that my stock radio is about the same size…BUT it includes a six disk CD changer, 25 presets for AM and FM and all kinds of other features.
Sorry but I’d rather have the nice sounding music as I cruise around town.
