I watched several hours of last night’s broadcast. Tuesday and Wednesdays are the “less expensive” cars, even though several have topped out at over 100K. I did see several cars that rolled over the auction block that appeared to be bargains, but when you tack on the 8% buyer’s premium, and the cost of moving a car/cars from Scottsdale back to your home, maybe not as good a bargain as first thought.

Actually, I was most interested in the 1968 Camaro Convertible that was restored by students at McPherson College working on their Auto Restorations Technology degrees. The proceeds from the sale of this car were going back to the school in the form of scholarship dollars. I thought the car was extremely well done.

Over the past couple of years, I have heard on several occasions that Jay Leno is a major benefactor of this school and has pumped alot of interest and money into this school and their Auto Restoration Technology program. Think about it – someone has to teach and pass on these restoration skills to the next generation. Also, with nicely done collector cars bringing the kind of money that they now bring, a young person with the proper academic training and technical training, can make a good living doing what they love.

To answer your questions about the Mustangs – I saw several that I was interested in. That little 1965 Red Coupe, with the inline 6, and 13th inch wheels didn’t bring alot of money, but the quality of the value was suspect also. A fresh $500 Maaco paint job (red, of course) can hide alot of bondo and rust and future problems. Most of the Mustangs, Boss Cars, Mach 1s and fastbacks are being severly critiqued on the vintage mustang forum. There are several VMF forum members at Barrett-Jackson and posting to the forum.

I’ve watched it on and off for the last few days and have been quite surprised on some of the prices. I can’t imagine what some of the street rod owners are thinking when their car that cost $200k to build sold for 40-60k, but that’s the risk you take.

The Super Snake was interesting to watch, what an amazing price for a piece of history!

Have you noticed the number of bidders that are winning multiple cars? There must be some VERY deep pockets in this world ~ wow!

I will also say I’m not impressed with Craig Jackson. He has turned this at times into a very greedy auction wanting to get the top dollar out of everything, even at times begging the crowd to bid higher and higher. While I understand everyone wants to make money, it’s not flattering to watch.

THere were some nice cars that went through on Sunday. Especially sharp was a 1957 Olds 98 Custom. Tony Stewart was bidding on it but didn’t buy it.

The most original item that I saw auctioned was the original (written and autographed) lyrics to “while my guitar gently weeps”. Back in the day, I was out there “rockin’ and rollin'” when this tune was originally released. It seems like only yesterday…..
