You may be onto something worthwhile with this post. If the class awards were monetary (i.e., gas cards in the amounts of say $25 for first, $15 for second, and $10 for third), I would vote for monetary awards.
Between plaques and trophies, I prefer trophies hands down.

Monetary is always nice, like gift cards to parts suppliers, etc.
I prefer trophies over plaques any day. Although plaques are easier to dust lol.
I don’t think they would go for money especially 25.00 for first, a 24″ tall trophy only cost 3.00 (or less). We don’t go with the idea of winning a piece of plastic, its more for the fun and looking at other cars.
Either is fine with me. Not many shows give away money, the trophies are quite cheap in comparison. I’ve been to some where they give for most club members, an incentive for pre-registering, etc. I’d rather see the money stuck into quality awards (Fox Lake comes to mind, their trophies are amazing, along with Pardeeville). Dave at MIS gave out really nice awards this year too.
I think trophies are nice if they have put a little time and thought into them. I heard someone saying at one of the shows that they were able to get rid of all the old trophies their club had sitting around. A monetary award of some kind is nice but it doesn’t last leave a lasting impression.
Trophies are nice, some of the shows give exceptional awards now. I also like money if given in the right situation. We have quite a few trophies collected now from over the last 20+ years of showing cars on and off.
