Madison’s plunge down Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live” from No. 1 mid-sized city in 1996 to No. 89 today has absolutely delighted those who detest the city and its liberal traditions.

But one ranking that has received virtually no press attention in the state — and understandably so — is the one from CNBC showing Wisconsin falling from No. 33 to No. 37 in the list of “America’s Top States for Business.”

Wisconsin is ranked a shocking No. 47 for its workforce, a ranking based on the education level, number of available workers and relative success of state worker training programs in placing participants in jobs.

The low ranking from CNBC in this key category is no doubt also linked to the fact Wisconsin is always touting the quality of its workforce in its marketing materials. (See Business Beat, May 14, 2008.)

Only West Virginia, New York and Hawaii are ranked lower for their workforce.

    Doesn’t surprise me, pretty pathetic.

I just saw this on The Today Show a couple of days ago:

Madison ranked as healthy place for seniors

Madison ranks high on another quality of life survey.

The AARP study shows Madison is third healthiest city for seniors.

An article in the group’s magazine says Madison has worked hard to earn its reputation as a green, healthy city with lower-than-average rates of diabetes and high cholesterol. It cited numerous and well-maintained bike trails, city buses that cut down on air pollution, and recreational activities that range from kayaking in the summer to ice-boating in the winter.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, topped the list.

I will always find it funny that Madison considers itself liberal. It is the most conservative place I have lived. I am sorry, but being tolerant of homosexuality and marijuana is only partially liberal. Those of us that enjoy women, smoking cigars, handguns, and other heterosexual tendancies sure can feel limited in what we allowed to do legally in this “liberal” city.
