Why don’t they raise the state sales tax and get it over with. When is government going to live within its means. Same thing with schools. A normal part of any budget is the normal maintenance of existing equipment and infrastructure. Why do we keep electing the same of of people who make the same mistakes over and over?

Maybe the current economic crisis will jolt people into elcting more intelligent people.

GTO Man, having worked within state government for the past 15 years, I can tell you that this government has not and will not ever live within it’s means. It seems to be a tax and spend type of government with taxes always falling very short of what the government spends annually! Have you ever noticed the proliferation of special “fees” and “assessments” and “special charges” tacked on to existing fees and charges? It is too easy to try and fix the budget by taxing the sick (hospital bed tax) and smokers (increase the tobacco tax) and on and on and on.

I have never agreed with or quite understood how we fund our public schools. This would be my first priority for a change in policy. Our schools are underfunded and parents/teachers have always made up the difference, or in many cases, done without.

You are certainly correct about our elected officials making the same mistakes over and over again. Here’s a very recent example: Our 911 call center is understaffed, but more importantly, improperly supervised. The easy answer offered up is to hire 10 new employees . Nobody wants to talk about accountability or responsibility. Just throw more money at the problem and the 911 call center will fix itself?

Government will become intelligent and responsible when we elect intelligent and responsible people to those positions. Also may I suggest maybe getting involved by running yourself for a spot in local government? Aldermanic posts, school board, county supervisor, township president? Perhaps if we get more small business people, middle class workers and NOT lawyers and activists, it could happen. I’m thinking of running for school board myself.

It costs money to run for office, to get your name out and your voice heard. So, as a result, we get a government of the rich who do the job only to get more rich and not to serve the people’s interests. Nothing short of a complete reform could ever solve it.
