I’m curious if anyone is having troubles lately getting collector or hobbyist cars registered?

This afternoon, I heard about a guy (?), 70-ish, who has been restoring cars with his grandson, during the winters, for over a decade. This spring they completed another car and applied for registration. No response from DMV for months.

He finally inquired about the registration. DMV told him they never received his application. Luckily, he’d sent it registered mail. When he pointed that out, DMV “magically” found his application. They ultimately denied his application. When he tried to discuss this with them, they promised to have a supervisor call him back to discuss it. They never called him back.

Mind you, his application included receipts for all the parts he bought and used.

I went through crap with these morons for about 3 years for my truck. DMV (WisDOT) seems to have set their sights on removing all “old cars” from the roads. Have any of you had problems with this lately?

An aquiantance of mine had issues getting a Hobbyist plate. He applied for it last spring and got it about a month ago. With the hobbyist plate, he had to send in photo’s and descriptions of all modifications on his vehicle.

I have yet to transfer my collector plate. I don’t forsee any problems unless you are trying to get a plate for a modified vehicle, which is DMV’s way of keeping certain vehicles off the road IMO.

What is going on at the DMV? It is ridiculous that people are having trouble getting these vehicles registered. Seems like there is a faction there that dislikes collector cars. Sounds like they need some personnel changes.

You’re wrong about only modified vehicles being effected. DOT’s already tried to enforce this crap against ex-military vehicles, the majority of which were unmodified. Their only “crime” was not having a NHTSA label certifying that the vehicle met FMVSS (safety standards). I have documentation of this.

DMV does not have the right to kick off “certain vehicles”. They have to enforce existing laws. PERIOD. They have every right to make suggestions for new laws, but they don’t MAKE the rules.

DMV’s currently requiring all the photos etc. for applications for unmodified exmilitary vehicles also. But, in a new twist, DMV refuses to issue Temp plates for any exmilitary vehicles, so you can’t even drive the thing until DMV gets around to issuing the paperwork. As your buddy will tell you, this can take MONTHS!

No, this is just DOT’s way of being a pain in the arse, but just when they want to. Sound fair? NOT.

    AMEN!

This is my opinion, and that of several other people who have actually dealt directly with DOT’s attorney over the past few years. It’s also the opinion of several legislators who I have spoken with.

    To All,

I’m trying to get in contact with any who are having (or have had) recent problems with DMV registration. If you know anyone who has, please refer them to me. I, and others, are trying to get a handle on how bad this problem is.

    Thanks,
