This evening, the Lovely Lori and I went to the new QS&L. First thing I notice is the door handles are gas pump fillers…cool. Entering, they have a few coin op games where you can try and get prizes by snipping the string the prizes are attached to. After two tries at getting a Magellan GPS unit, I gave up. A hostess led us to the dining area which features a red Corvette on a Back Yard Buddy portable lift. Great chance to view the underside of a Corvette! A couple of fathers were showing their young sons the bits and pieces of the chassis. Various car and bike bits are attached to the walls along with other automobilia and ephemera. As I was led to a table, I was rather taken aback at the cheap green plastic outside chairs they are using in the dining room. Even most fast food joints have better seating. I opted for a booth as that seating was of more substantial stuff. On to the eats. Lori ordered the Shrimp and some Chili. The shrimp were of adequate size and deep fried. The chili comes with steak burger bits, cheddar-jack cheese, sour cream, jalapeno and tortilla chips and a fresh salsa. Her meal came with fries as well and the house made cole slaw looked to be very fresh and not the usual runny bland stuff you get elsewhere. I ordered the half rack of baby back ribs and the cinnamon apples. I opted for the basic BBQ sauce which is not overtly spicy and is sweet with a hickory taste. The ribs themselves are very good. They did not have the “frozen and reheated taste that I find at other rib establishment. The meat was very tender and falling off the bone. The little bowl of Cinnamon Apple was a nice diversion from the usual sides. Warm chunks of apple in a cinnamon sauce…recommended. I tried Lori’s fries (she’s dieting) and they are good, not dried out but not soggy or greasy. I can’t wait to try more menu items. Drinks were Diet Pepsis. They serve alcoholic libations as well. On the Pepsi stuff, they carry Pepsi products, but not Diet Mountain Dew which would have been Lori’s first choice. She also had a cup of coffee after dinner. Bill came to just under $35. Menu is heavy into wings, ribs, burgers, steak, and they have several salads and a couple of soups to try. I really want to taste the Bourbon Baked Beans they have.
QS&L will also be having a Wednesday night bike night and a Thursday night Car Cruise night featuring live music. Although the menu leans toward the above mentioned pub style food, the menu has a lot of variety in it to keep the most serious gourmand interested. The most interesting aspect of the restaurant is the choice of BBQ sauces. Many different varieties from the basic sweet hickory sauce to all out 500,000 Scoville Heat Units Triple Atomic Sauce which you have to sign a waiver for. Anyone want to see if your taste buds have what it takes?

Sounds like a nice place. I know I enjoy the QSL’s here, food and drink. There aren’t that many auto themed restaurants around.

Sounds like a decent place. I have yet to check out the new QSL on Johnson St. in Madison, but I can say that when I attend a car night at the one in Middleton, I eat at home and bring my own drinks with me. I like the atmosphere, but not the food. Here’s why:

-I’ve never had anything cooked the way Ive asked it to be prepared.

-9 times out of 10 I get a waiter or waitress who has a piss poor attitude.

-A friend of mine took his wife and daughters there last spring and it took them 90 minutes to get there food. He was lied to by two punk kid servers and the manager finally straightened it out. Got there meal for free, but piss-poor service once again.

-I do not believe in mandatory gratuity for groups of 8 or more.

-I know exactly what you’re talking about with the patio furniture tables and chairs. Kind of ghetto if you ask me.

Now, I stated I like the atmosphere outside during the summer, but the Middleton atmosphere inside is another story:

-The Thurs Nite DJ sucks. Then they have karaoke also, and I can’t decide which one is worse.

-Bartenders in the ‘garage’ are not friendly. I want to buy a soda or a beer from a friendly bartender, not some college girl on the rag.

-The nerd’s at the car gate last year were turning away some of my friends with modified import sports cars because they weren’t “classics”. As they’re turning cars around, here come two old geezers in new Corvettes who were welcomed with open arms. WTF? A new Corvette is now a classic, but an Evo and a Speed3 that could wax them ‘vettes hands down aren’t “classic enough?”

If it wasn’t for the company of good friends, I’d tell QSL to kiss my ass. I don’t really care to go there this year, a cruise in started about 15 miles from where I live and its easier to get to, so I’ll spend my time there :)

Did you ever think it might be your attitude that is the problem. And if you dislike it so much why go.

There are many restaurants in the area.

There used to be a gasoline station/automotive themed restaurant in the Middleton area, right off of Airport Road. I am going back a few years, but they welcomed old cars to park in their lot on the weekends and provided free drinks to those who brought out their cars. Can someone help me remember the name of this establishment? I took my car out a couple of times and really appreciated the warm welcome and hospitality. It was very nice just hanging out in the parking lot and enjoying the variety of cars.

Tallard’s Station. It was owned by a guy named Jim Johnson. That was an awesome place to eat, take your car, and enjoy a great atmosphere. I was upset when they closed, it was hard to beat the good times had there :(

You must have missed the part of my post where I say I meet up with good friends there to talk all things automotive… I don’t think my attitude is the problem, I think its the fact I don’t like how they cater to all of the rich old bastards week after week.

Shouldn’t you be bitching about Scott Walker or something?

Im with Moparkid on this one. I used to like QSL in Middleton when it first opened….but the food quickly became overpriced, the service usually was terrible and they started to suffer from the “Middleton Mentality” (aka, snobish attitudes).

After being turned away from a cruise in because of my car, I havent been back since.

Hopefully the new one is better.

And yes, Tallards was a cool place.

Wow, I didn’t think the review would spark such venom. I think it’s hard to satisfy everyone. About the Vette thing, I think the owner is a Vette guy. I’m assuming that because of the Corvette up on the lift. The New Berlin store is run by the Middleton people. I think a nice import tuner should be welcomed at the cruise night. We are all car guys, no? My review was done without my usual bias about things regarding cruise nights, but it should be known that I have an established cruise night at the Dairy Queen a couple miles down Moreland on the same night they schedule theirs. I’m kinda worried as they are now the 300 pound Gorilla in the room, but I am hoping that my price point for food and the give aways will retain my cruisers. I’m just the hired DJ, but I think we will do alright. I know the Loser’s Car Club has said they will stay at DQ, but they do want to try the QS&L to see what it’s like. I want everyone to have a good time with cars and friends and I think mine will provide that.

Late last year, Dick and I were parked with a group of car owners from the Loser’s Car Club, at the Mayville Car Show. What a great bunch of folks who are really devoted to the hobby and to their club! The Loser’s participate as a club at car show events, so when they show up, they will show up with alot of cars!

I give the Middleton owners credit. They wanted to open a large sports bar in downtown Madison but this city wasn’t receptive to it. So they opened a QSL on State Street and now one in New Berlin. I wish them luck in their new venture.

Dont get me wrong, I dont have anything against QSL in general, just didnt like how I got treated in Middleton. Ive been to the QSL in Charlotte NC, one in Atlanta and one in Indy multiple times and had great service. Just that the Middleton facility was sour.

I do agree that the Losers Car Club puts together great events, and is made up of really really nice people.

Thank you to QSL for opening more restaurants and creating more jobs in Wisconsin.

Agreed Ryan… my only beef with them is the still blame the RA for something another club did years ago.. Get your clubs straight!
