It was in our local paper yesterday that the state was going to quit issuing the stickers for your plates, suppose to save the state $800,000.00 a year. One of the issues for the discontinuing of the stickers was that you can’t really tell if the car is registered until the cop calls it in, because people steal stickers and put them on there cars. Maybe now we can get rid of the front lic. plate also.:)

Stormeaston, Not sure where you live, but I found this from the Wausau paper. It says it’s from the AP.

Is it just me that thinks this is nuts? I’m having a hard time seeing how saving 800K$ on stickers makes sense. I understood that the presence of those stickers was to indicate to a LEO that the vehicle was registered. Instead the LEO will have to run each plate to verify registration. How many can he run in a day, and how much will that cost, just in labor?

Secretary Gotlieb says he’s heard of people stealing the stickers. Undoubtedly there are incidents of misuse of the stickers, but there are existing laws against such behavior.

It worries me that Secretary Gotlieb bases his justification of the change on hearsay. For a Governmental Regulatory Agency such as DOT to make a major alteration of policy, without a rule-change approved by the legislature, and without verifiable statistics to warrant that change, should not be acceptable.

Changes of this magnitude, made without proper legislative oversight, could easily make the “collector car” hobby a thing of the past. Imagine if DOT forced every pre-’68 vehicle to register for parade/display operation only, just like they managed to do to many ex-military vehicles last year. That means no rides to the drive-in, no stops at the grocery store or Menards, never being able to legally just drive the thing to work on a sunny day.

Sorry if I’m an alarmist, but DOT already pushed this stuff with vehicles I own, and I’m talking from experience. This stuff really happens. Look at Trans-131, which limits engine-swaps, and which got run through last year without any collector opposition.

I hope we can get rid of the front plates too. But I hope it doesn’t happen via this proposal.

I also hope everybody here cares enough about your/our hobby to keep their eyes on things, and get involved to protect our rights when we need to.

I’m sure there are goods and bads to this……I really can’t say if it’s a good thing….only time will tell I guess. And your right, we have to stay on top of things that involve our hobby.

But I really want to get rid of those front plates. 👿

What do other states do, as far as front plate use, and as far as year stickers? Anybody know?

Would such a change affect us when we operate in another U.S. state?

WI is (I believe) 1 of 7 states that requires the use of a front license plate. I had a convo with a friend of mine who is a police officer over this matter a few years ago… He told me law enforcement prefers a front plate in case they are looking for a vehicle in a case – its easier to read a front plate coming at you than it is a rear plate in your mirror.

I’m not sure how it would affect travel in other states. I’m sure there’s other states who do not use a renewal sticker.

If this saves the state more money, I’m all for it :)

I’m with you there. But I’m curious how much you think it will cost to have LEOs running plates to check for current registration?

With the stickers, they can visually check hundreds of cars daily. (Granted, they may be seeing a few stolen stickers.) How many could they possibly check on a manual basis, while still performing their current tasks too?

I’m skeptical that such a change will save the state any money in the long run.

I don’t think the lack of stickers will save any money in the long run. That being said, I don’t think you could blame the DOT of being logical.
