Another great turn out for the second year of Vintage Torquefest and the weather was just fine too!
I drove on down to Maquoketa, IA from Madison, but before I went into the show I drove past Maquoketa and went to Thiel Motors to check out some of their collector cars for sale.
On my way to Thiel I saw about 50 cars driving the other way towards the show (it is always nice to see them drive by). During this drive I saw a VW single cab bus with a large cattle grabber front bumper … I knew I had seen this bus before and I thought that the guy from the TV show American Pickers owned one with a bumper like it (and he is from Iowa).
After I visited Thiel it was back to show … I was driving my daily driver and was escorted by 4 people on horses to my parking spot (just like I was driving a show car). I pulled in at about 10:30 and there were about 400 spectator cars …
At the show there were +300 cars, +50 bikes, vendors, bands and a dirt track. This is a 3 day event including a movie at a local drive-in about 5 miles away from the show.
This thing had a drivetrain from a School bus in it:
Same car and yes that is the driveshaft in the center (I heard this guy was popping wheelies the day before)
This one even took a lap on the dirt track!
Custom made trophies, no plastic POS …
Hmmmmm…. here is that VW single cab ….
And here is Mike from the TV show American Pickers. I spoke with him and he said it is a 1962 and it is his daily driver (he mentioned that yesterday he hauled a load of mulch in it) and the only other vehicle he has is the van you see on the TV show …
Some of Mike’s stuff for sale:
Steak Sandwiches! mmmmm…
One of 6 bands playing throughout the day:
Okay this is a first for me … a barber at the car show!
A little mud track racing …
