Madison taxes are going up 3.2%. My salary hasn’t gone up that much in years, total.

They can only go up a certain percentage but I don’t know what that is tied to. I don’t mind paying property taxes but year after year with no raises during those years makes it difficult to stomach. I actually think Soglin did a good job in keeping it to 3.2% considering what the city departments wanted.

Madison has always gotten the short end of the stick as far as revenue sharing from the State. Last year Milwaukee received $228 million while Madison received $7.5 million.

Not to be argumentative, but why is it that when the state cuts revenue sharing to municipalities such as Madison, that it is the taxpayerthat always ends up making up the difference? Why can’t the municipalities such as Madison, do some belt tightening, even if it means some layoffs and/or cutbacks in service? It just seems that the taxpayeris always the one to make up the difference in revenue and spending.

City of Milwaukee Population (2010 figure): 594,883

City of Madison population (April 2011): 233,209

Madison should be receiving approximately $89 million in shared revenue.
