New on this forum, but not to the wisconsin car show scene. Just wondering, how many of you are fond of judged shows over Voting.

I personally like going to judged shows, I feel that voting is kinda unfair, you got a good hand of non car folk going around and all it takes is a paint job or a certain year of car. What are your thoughts on this?

    Welcome to the forum.

To answer your question, I prefer being judged as opposed to being a show participant who judges. This topic was brought up not too long ago on here… Participant voting IMO is nothing more than a popularity contest. Now, if you are judged on a scale (paint, interior, engine, etc) against other cars in your class, you can see the areas where one may need to improve some on there own car to make it better. However, a judged show may not always be fair either. Sometimes one can get screwed over because of a ‘Somebody’ having a car in that class, or the judges may have a brand preference, or they outright missed something that to some would be deemed important.

But, apparently if you’re like me, you “take the car show thing way too seriously” and its “The only thing in my life.” :S

This topic has come up a couple times in the last few weeks.

Most like judged shows, but even at a judged show it can turn into the good old boys from the home town winning a lot of the awards (ie: shows when announcer states things like: “I’ve known Ricky since I was bouncing him on my knee, and his 1995 Saturn 4 door is a best in class winner”)

Voting in many ways turns into that too.

The best shows are concourse ones, which the only one I know of is in Milwaukee.

But in the end whether it is judged or voting it is a 15 dollar plastic trophy not a super bowl ring …

I agree with you all, I always ask if the show is Judged by a panel of judges or the crowd votes, for instance I got a 3 Chrysler K-cars, showroom condition, well anyways I had my fleet at the mopars on the mississipi show, I have every inch detailed, underbody engine ect…and I still got beaten by a daily driver 85 Daytona, grease ball engine, aftermarket sound system. the other K was a lebaron convertable, and its hood was not up… I think it takes the fun out of bring home hardware.

I’m very impressed at the Reedsburg show this year, friendly, the judges were strict and would ask you questions about your car. ended up taking home a second.

Lancaster is also good at judging.

    Portage was great as well.

also I think cars that are not 20 years old should not be allowed…

oh I agree that fairness is lost sometimes, like at the cashton fall festival, the guy who was running the show never can place ahead of me, so what did he do? told the judges to vote my car down…I even saw it.

I wouldn’t say that this is all I do..but I do like good competition.

I too was in DBQ for that show…. A good example of why not to have participant judging.

Hey I know all about that Reedsburg show, there was a pretty sweet 88 Buick there the same color as your K-car in that same class… nice ride if you ask me, and hey I even got the Lincoln running so I might not need to drive the Buick in the salt as much lol. About time you joined this forum, did you see you can rate all those shows you mentioned here to? Welcome aboard!

I enjoy going to a show whether it is judged or not.

As far as competing I enjoy judged shows more than the other. Unfortunately more and more shows are going to the participant judged side. Finding knowledgable people to judge show will lead to more of this. And it is easier for the organizers to let the participants do the judging. The hard part for the organizers in participant judged shows is counting the ballots.

haha you know whats great about that Lincoln, I got it started, insured, registered, drove it exactly 5.2 miles then it stopped shifting gears properly. Exasperated I drove it home and parked it, and now it won’t start! I don’t think it was the hot rod driving style that lead “pappy” to drinkin I think it was the damn repair bills on that Lincoln! Know what you mean about dull weekends (except they are all now filled with work at the new job) and cue in the cold weather.

Glad you decided to join the forum, and to evade the risk of being accused of hijacking this thread to complain about my Town Car I will chip in my two cents re: judging. I have seen well done judged shows (Pardeeville) and not so great judged shows. I think participant judged shows add interest to the mix and can allow cars that would not otherwise win to be recognized, but at the same time that style judging seems more prone to problems. I do prefer judged shows because the core idea is a fair competition between comparable year or style cars. The number one problem I see at shows of either style is poor class layout and without a good class foundation, any show that gives awards will likely have problems. I’ll admit that I deliberately go to more shows that are judged in some form than not but as long as I can score a dash plaque I’m usually happy.

…I agree with everything said except that line. There is a reason that classes exist in most good shows to prevent comparisons between old and new.

I think cars 20 years and newer SHOULD be included. Ever year you are seeing more and more newer cars rolling into shows, because owners want to customize (or keep’em stock) a modern day turn key car that will be a lot more reliable as compared to a +40 yr old car.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is an Automotion in the the Dells at a different location for newer cars (they already drive up for the show to drive around and walk around to check out the old school rides) …

I also agree that newer cars should be included in shows as long as they have classes to recognize these cars… Not everyone can afford (or wants) and older car. The next generation needs to be welcomed into the car scene in order to keep car shows, cruise nights and the like alive. Not everyone likes change, but nothing stays the same.
