I am going to replace the carburetor in my GTO. Currently it has a Rochester Quadrajet from the early 70’s. Would you recommend putting in another Rochester or another brand such as a Holley?

I ended up buying a Jet Modified Quadrajet from Jegs. I will let you know how it works out.

What does it mean by jet modified?

Jet is the company name. Following is a link to the carb info. I purchased a stage 2.

GTO Man, that replacement was not “inexpensive” was it? The refurbished Autolite 4100 that I purchased from Pony Carbs last year was $550! What is it about these carbs that make them so expensive?

They seem to be able to set the price they want. I looked into an original Quadrajet and was able to find two. They were $700 and $850. One of the sellers deals in many Quadrajets. He said a Ram Air IV carburetor is going for $4000 now.

Marshall, how do you like the carb you bought?

I am doing more to my GTO this off-season than I had planned: springs, shocks, gauges, carburetor, flowmaster exhaust. I wasn’t planning on getting a carburetor but I was not happy with the performance. The carb on the car was actually a 1974 high-altitude carb, which makes sense because the car was originally from Colorado.

So Far, the autolite has been good. But, I was only able to drive the car back from Prairie du Sac and put the car away for the winter. It seems to be much smoother than the old Holley that was on the car. The big difference is an automatic choke feature (the old Holley had a manual, cable operated choke). Consequently, the new autolite is colder starting and takes longer to warm up to idle rpms, and smooth out.

I picked up the GTO today after having the carburetor put on along with some other parts. Seems to work great. Am having alittle trouble with the coil springs. Bought a new pair for the rear but the car is less level than it was before. THe originals are actually taller than the new ones. I had them put the old ones back. The front end of the car has always sat a little higher than it should. So I am going to order some new front coils which I believe will be lower than the ones on there.

Everything is complete I had done:
    – new springs – car sits level now instead of higher in the front

    – new shocks

    – new carburetor – might need to have it re-jetted, kind of hesitates in second gear.

    – new gauge cluster under dash

    – new flowmaster exhaust system – sounds great

Nice to get everything done early in the season

Looked like Laural and Hardy were installing that carburetor. The tie was a temporary fix since I didn’t have a clamp for it.

Boy, oh Boy, talk about temporary fixes!!!!

I have spent more time underneath my car the past couple of months than I have ever spent behind the wheel.

I noticed that I have a total of six (6) exhaust clamps and that they were not year correct OE for the car. I did some research and determined that these clamps should be stamped “fomoco” to be year correct. Turns out my current exhaust clamps came from Farm/Fleet, so I replaced them with year correct OE clamps from NPD. The six OE clamps from NPD was $65 plus shipping. It’s unlikely that any judge will climb underneath the car and check exhaust clamps, but if they ever do, I am ready!!!!!!
