Oct. 10

1871: A drizzeling rain on Tuesday Morning extinguishes the remnant of the Great Chicago fire. It is thought that about 300 persons have lost their lives and almost 90,000 have been left homeless.

1899: Meatpacker Philip D. Armour returns to Chicago after spending five months in Europe for the benefit of his health.

1907: At Detroit the Cubs take their fourth straight game, 2 to 0, to win their first world championship.

1898: A heavy snowstorm damages many of the decorations which have been hung for Chicago’s Peace Jubilee.

1903: Former President Grover Cleveland makes his fourth visit to Chicago. In a sppech to the Commercial Clib he calls for the rebirths of patriotism.

1900: Registrartion day adds 117,150 to Chicago’s registered voters, brining the total to 404,312

1918: An influenza epidemic sweeps through the city causing widespread sickness and death.

1964: The Beatles are given a sprited welcome when they arrive at Chicago’s Midway Airport.

1833: The First Baptist Chirch is Organized by the Reverend Allen B. Freeman in the Temple Building.

1900: The Chicago Telephone Company reduces the pay station rate from $.10 to $.05 a call. By now there are 50,000 phones, public and private, in Chicago.

1924: Prohibition Director Percy Oweb says that the makers of the patent medicine Cyco have “one of the sweetest booze permits in the city.” They buy 1,660 gallons of liquor a month for their product.

1931: Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in Prision for tax evasion.
