How old does it have to be to qualify as classic rock?

Probably 70s or early to mid 80s. It isn’t punk though

I have, and still wonder what actually constitutes “classic rock”. I mean I am sure that there is some definition somewhere in some music text book or in some record companies contracts or something. But what I am looking for is the essence of it. I mean why does like my favorite example of Jimi Hendrix still inspire me. And the bigger question is does he still inspire the younger generations with the same energy?

I know that anyone that listens to a radio has heard some Hendrix. And just to set my mind at ease and confirm for me that I have chosen a quality song or artist as what I consider “classic”, does anyone under 30 or 20 consider Hendrix to be damn good music?

With out looking for a textbook or google defination I would have to say that classic rock might be considered some form of a top rock hit song that hit the charts between 1950 and maybe ending 1985 or so.(even though many classics where never really chart toppers) But I am not really interested in the numbers. I want to know about the soul of the song, the living energy. I accecpt that for some reason some songs are tied in our heads to the times, places and events of our past. But what I really want to know is if some teenager has just heard Hendrix for the first time if it is a good song to them, do they feel the drive, do they feel the energy, has it still got the right stuff or should I just blow my brains out because I am getting too old?

I agree, its a song that has stood the test of time as well. Also bands that were concieved and popular in that time era but still produce more recently.

One definition of classic rock is the songs that stand the test of time, popular from generation to generation. The Beatles, The Who, ELO, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Springsteen come to mind.
