BSG was just amazing! I’m going to throw some spoilers in here for this episode so beware everyone. I was really skeptical about the boxing episode because I had heard rumours that when scifi cancelled sg1 one of the reasons was they were going to switch to more “mainstream” programming, including a lot of wrestling/boxing. What BS. When I saw the previews for that episode I thought that it was just scifi forcing the producers to make a bullshit episode to introduce their new theme. Fortunately I was wrong. I see how it fits in the context of the story and I agree that episode and the last one about Kat weren’t that great – but now I see how they were subtly weaving and building up the important plot elements for this episode!!
It was a fantastic choice on their part last season to get onto New Caprica and then flash forward a year and have all those changes appear like the marriages. Going back and filling it in really brought to light a lot of things in really good way, like the whole relationship with Kara/Lee. I originally thought they would be good together but ever since Lee married D I think that he shouldn’t be going to fool around or even be in a serious relationship with Starbuck. She’s too much of a hotbutton and brash person, whereas D has genuine affection for him and it seems like they have a very good relationship. Not to mention that she’s his wife. Also Starbuck cooled the relationship with Anders but I think he will recover from that fairly easily. D, on the other hand, IMO won’t be able to easily recover from a divorce from Apollo and it would really hurt her and she wouldn’t be the same. I was shocked to see the flashback scenes of Kara/Lee in the desert on New Caprica, and how she betrayed him. Wow, talk about more depth. I really don’t like Lee as much as person now, however, because he’s cheating on D. I think D knows it too, obviously Anders does. This leads me into my next point.I thought the episode was great on the whole, but then I saw the short preview for the one on Jan 21st and it completely blew this one away! Take a look here for the preview, its on the bottom right. From what it looked like in the preview, D is the only one who can reach Starbuck so she goes to help her.. remember I think she knows about Starbuck and Apollo… and says to her “I’m going to bring Starbuck back to Apollo”. Think about the implications of what that situation means. From my interpretation, she knows the situation and knows they (Kara/Lee) want to be together so she’s going to save Starbuck and bring her back to Apollo. What a selfless act! What an amazing character! If it plays out like I will be amazed at the depth and strength that the writers have created in Duala!
Ok, wow, now for the rest of the episode. Lets see, first we have Sharon finding out that her kid is still alive, and Adama telling her! Helo had a good point about Adama being the best person of all people to know what it is like to loose a child. I could see, however, some good about what he and Roslin did because they did try and protect the baby from the Cylons, which Sharon and Helo would have tried to do themselves too. Also we have the Chief confronting his faith and trying to find the Eye of Jupiter, to lead them to earth! The cylons are coming to attack, Adama is going to launch nukes! Lee and Anders may have to duke it out over whether or not Anders can go after Kara. Have I forgotten anything?
Also the whole storyline with Saul Tigh and recovering from the loss of Ellen was really incredible. Very well done.
In conclusion this series is fantastic, definitely up to par with B5 in terms of the best television show. I certainly hope the ratings are good enough for scifi and they continue to produce many more years of this fanastic show! Thank you Ron Moore!!
