In recent years we’ve seen a resurgence of several classic models – the mustang, camaro, and challenger. Of all of these cars what features do you like about them in comparison to the originals? One thing that I like is that they have taken a retro styling design approach and it has been a great success! Are you planning on buying or do you already own any of these “new” classics?

I am at the bottom of page 2, (about 60 names down), on the waiting list at the Don Miller dealership on Odana Road for the new, 2007/2008 Dodge Challenger R/T. I really want the Vitamin C orange with a hemi motor, but I will take any color/motor combo that is offered to me. There are no choices and if you are called and passed over on the available vehicle, you are off of the waiting/reserve list. I am not a MOPAR guy, but when I saw the new Challenger R/T back in the spring, I knew that was the car for me. These cars are supposed to start arriving in April of 2007, but in limited production numbers.

Hopefully there will be a Challenger left when they reach your name on the list. I think they have done a great job with the Mustang and the Challenger looks great. I also like the look of the new Camaro even though it is not quite as close to the original as the other two.

    Absolutely!!!

This car is and will be an instant classic, just like many of the new Mustangs that are showing up and competing at the car shows.

icon_applause.gif INSTANT CLASSIC. You guys are right. This is the best of the redesigned classics. I love the car. You get the looks of a true classic along with the safety and reliablity of a new car. Oh yea! don,t forget the warranty. I hear it has a price tag of about $38,000. Anyone know for sure?

    Jim,
I think your number might be a bit high for the base model. But, equipped with a Hemi and nicely optioned, it will be a little north of 38K.

I love the Challanger, however I’m betting the awesome hood (Carbon Fiber painted orange but with the 2 racing stripes left raw carbon) won’t make it into production.

I read an article about the new Camaro and it was wondering if GM will go for the fully independant rear suspension and make a car that can hadle or go cheap like Ford and put a solid rear axle like the Mustang.

I own a 350z. In some respects Nissan wanted it to be retro, but there really aren’t that many similarities….

I agree that the hood probably won’t go to production but I hope I am wrong. That is one awesome hood. Ford missed the boat by not having IRS on the s197 models. They did make a change to the 2006 V6 coupe pony by adding a pan bar which helped with handling. Maybe one day IRS will be standard on the Mustang. Cost is the factor stopping it for now.

I don’t think any of them stand up to the originals.

I am hoping it is an option at least, but if not the after market will come to the rescue.
Speaking of which, a buddy on my ship has a Mitsubishi 3000 GT and he got a carbon fiber hood for it and after showing him the pics off the Challanger that is what he wants to do.

The thing I don’t understand is why they didn’t use a shortened Aussie Falcon platform and suspension when they redid the Mustang? The Falcon has IRS, it has rear wheel drive and can handle lots and lots of power (a straight six that makes 325 hp and that V-8 that was in the SVT Lightning), it would of made a good match and would of enabled Ford to sell the Mustang in more counties.

Looks wise, maybe that is a matter of opinion, performance wise they blow the originals out of the water in almost every way.
Take a look at thiscomparison article that mentions talks about old muscle cars to new sport compacts.

Personally, I could live without the carbon fibre touches on the car. Being an old school kind of guy, I would be perfectly happy with the flat black or matt black hood and accents, but this is a 2007 or a mid year 2008 if they do hit the dealerships in April or May.

So when is the actual release date? Or has it not been announced yet, but will be sometime late 2008/early 2008?
