Did you attend? If so please write up your thoughts on the show … Click on the link in the above post…
June 26, 2012 at 2:21 am #40044AnonymousInactiveI think they need to re-think their class(maybe look at the road apples show), some of the classes seemed to not have many cars, and some of the classes seemed to overlap alittle in my thought. Also if you are going to have classes, be more strict on what cars go into the class.
i think a pick-up won in the stock car class, another ended up in the import class when it clearly wasn’t, and yes a ford skylinner is a convertible, from the announcer at award time “we wern’t sure what class to put you in, i guess we got you in the right class” after giving him the trophy. I think judging was a joke, maybe it was just my imagination but it seemed like if it weasn’t a chevy you were going to have a hard time winning, they came by mine and several others i saw, made a quik lap around it, and off to the next one. I don’t know how many judges they had but I personly don’t care for the “take a row and judge it” approch, you just can’t get consistant judging in a class that way. Overall I think with alittle more work on this show it could be a great show.June 26, 2012 at 2:35 am #40059moparkid25Participantjlgray wrote:I think they need to re-think their class(maybe look at the road apples show), some of the classes seemed to not have many cars, and some of the classes seemed to overlap alittle in my thought. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of nice cars won awards but a lot of winners beat out nicer cars. Not sure what the criteria for judging was, but it should be re-defined. Piss poor judging is why I quit going to Albany a few years ago.
June 26, 2012 at 2:46 am #40060jonmandudeParticipantI think no matter how a show is judged, someone will always feel unhappy. I think the best anyone can hope for is just be consistent and honest.
As a participant, try to remember that you drive your trophy. What others feel should mean very little. It is how your car makes you feel. A trophy or plaque will mean very little within a few days, but the pride you have in your car, and the people we all meet is what makes this hobby enjoyable. Many of us cannot afford $20K paint jobs and $15K engines. If you go to shows, odds are you will compete with those who can. That doesn’t make your car less enjoyable.
June 26, 2012 at 3:14 am #40045AnonymousInactiveThats just it, I don’t expect to win, and many nice cars did win, I just like to have a fair shot.
June 26, 2012 at 10:36 am #40062AnonymousInactiveI was there also and I will second what jlgray and moparkid25 posted.
The “take a row and judge it” approach simply doesn’t work because the other cars/trucks in your class are being judged by other judges with different values and ideas about what is right or not right with an individual vehicle.
Entrants were free to put their vehicles in any class they chose. i.e., There was a 1900 to 1964 Convertibles class, with 0 entries. There were plenty of these convertibles at the show, but it seemed these cars all entered in other classes, such as stock or modified. There was a 1900 to 2012 Kustoms class. Come on, a 112 year spread for a customs class??
The guy handing out the awards at the end of the show got confused, at times, about what was being recognized. For example, a 1937 Chevy Street Rod receiving an award in the 1900 – 2012 Imports (Modified) class? Since when is a 1937 Chevy street rod an import?
Also, the two big awards, Best of Show and Police Chief’s Pick, were local cars, were “featured” cars and were parked inside the registration area building. Maybe this was just a coincidence. Granted, both cars were great cars, but image and appearance are important, too, when it comes to a car show.
I don’t want to sound like “sour grapes”, but with the constant request for money ($5 for a goody bag, the DJ asking for donations in the tip jar everytime someone picked up a door prize, the DJ asking for a donation in his tip jar, and selling special tickets for the packers football prize at the end of show), I will probably pass this show up next year.
June 26, 2012 at 11:08 am #40063circletrackParticipantWow, it’s been years since I’ve been to this show, and I can now see why. Sounds like they need lots of help with their classes, along with several other areas.
June 26, 2012 at 12:16 pm #40064Amigo2kModeratorSo it sounds like this show is a for profit show?
June 26, 2012 at 1:56 pm #40065AnonymousInactiveGreat minds think alike – I was wondering the same thing – there is no designated charity indicated on the flyer, or mentioned at the show, so one could assume that it may be a for profit show.
June 26, 2012 at 7:13 pm #40046AnonymousInactiveAs the Promotions Manager for the Cruzin’ Portage Car and Truck Show, I feel it my duty to give my thoughts on the show. First and foremost, I respect all opinions and constructive critisizm, but we ARE and not-for -profit show. Our charities were announced many times. We also had a talk about the DJ requesting tips and that will be addressed. The charities were actually listed on the bags we were requesting money for. We also make sure that the money does go to the charities listed. The charities were not listed on the flier because we had many requests for help and we chose the charities closer to the show.
Now, about the judging. We do the take a row and go because have any of you tried to send one person to find all the cars in one class and judge them? When the cars are parked as they come in, the classes are separated and it is almost impossible to make sure every car is judged. We have a good group of judges that are all car enthusiasts and fair. The comment about the Chevys winning, well, there were a lot of them and there were numerous classes that had all makes covered. Was the Ferrarri noticed? There is no bias towards makes, sometimes it just works out that way. The BIG trophy winners were NOT local cars. The Best of Show car came from Eau Claire and the Police Chief award went to a car from New London. This year they just happened to be “feature cars” but that does not make the only determination on the winners. We also had a lot of perfect scores and it was the toughest year so far picking the top prizes.
There was a little confusion at the time of Trophy handout, but I think that I explained what happened and the true winners in that one class DID recieve the trophy they deserved. It was a clerical error and I made sure the cars were in the right class. I was trying to add a little humor about the retractable, and it WAS in the correct class. We know that not everyone is happy with the competion in their classes, but we are not going to MAKE anyone put their car in any certain class when it might fit in more than one. You know your car and we try to make sure it is fair for everyone. Each year we check our classes for numbers and try to adjust them the best we can. This year we had 2 classes with no cars that had 4 cars each last year. We can’t control who comes to the show. We are doing our best with the classes.
We do value everyones opinions, and we will address them as best as we can. Constructive critisizm is always welcome, but please make sure it is constructive. We put our hearts and souls, blood , sweat and tears in this show and want it to be the best show you ever attend and we will continue to grow the best we can.June 26, 2012 at 7:18 pm #40047AnonymousInactiveThe charities we donate to are:
The River Haven Homeless Shelter, The Columbia County Humane Society, The Portage Food Pantry, The Portage High School Band Department, and we also asked for help for a sponsor of ours that lost her business to a total loss fire, FLIRT. These charities were all posted and announced at the show. We appreciate everyone that donated, because we SUPPORT our local community. Portage is our home for the show and we will contiue to support Portage.June 26, 2012 at 10:44 pm #40069AnonymousInactiveradicalrods – Welcome to the forum, and thanks for correcting the misinformation about the charities.
I would simply ask this: If the larger shows, such as Beaver Dam, Fox Lake, Pardeeville and Blanchardville can have a judge or a judging team, judge all the cars in a given class (even though the cars are not parked together and spread out all over), would it be possible to make this change for next year’s show? I, for one, would welcome this small but important change to your show.
BTW, I did purchase a goody bag and just now noted that your charities are printed on the bag. My bad.

June 26, 2012 at 10:52 pm #40070Amigo2kModeratorIs the space large enough for designated rows or areas for each class?
My personal preference on feature cars is that they are advertised to bring in cars and spectators and are in a location, so you know they are the feature car. But, they are not part of the awards.
Also, are you willing to mail or email judging sheets to participants of the show?
Thank you for coming to this website!

I said to my partner in crime, “Kinda ballsy asking for tips when you play s*** like this for music!” Now, if he would’ve cranked up some Motley Crue, KISS, Megadeth, hell even some Bon Jovi – I’ve would’ve considered the tip. Obviously that’s not really car show music, but let’s change it up for once
I sent you a PM with my personal info, I’d like copies of our judging sheets. I stand by my comment regarding the judges, and will either retract it or set it in stone once I see my judging sheets. I know what my cars are, I’m a realist, I want to see how it was judged.
I was a bit put off about the donations for the bridal shop fire, and I ask one question: Why did the property owner not have insurance? Since when can you get a mortgage without insurance? The facts are not all in on this disaster yet, and there’s questions to be answered. Not trying to be an asshole about it, but from what I saw in the news reports the fire situation just seems fishy… I hope it all works out in the end for the people, because I hate seeing old buildings destroyed. They add a lot of character to the towns we all live in (unless you live in Verona, where everything is new  )
All criticsm is constructive, isn’t it?
