Does your car have a tach?

Does your daily driver or classic have a tachometer? Do you find it helpful when driving? I have one and it really helps for monitoring your engine and speed. Actually a few years back I had a car whose odometer and speedometer would just stop working at certain speeds, like over 50 or so. I ended up writing down the tach readings and using that as a reference for a bit until I could get it fixed

Yup. As big as the speedo.

Incidentally, the speedo in most cars reads about 10% high. When I’m going 70mph according to the car speedo, the GPS system says I’m going 64mph. As GPS never lies, the car must be reading high.

We also did a test – 5 minutes along the dual carriageway at exactly 60mph by the speedo didn’t take us 5 miles, a bit less than that (can’t remember how much less). Therefore, the car does know how far it’s gone but isn’t reporting the true speed to the driver.

My 70 Monte Carlo SS has a factory tach. I have added them to cars in the past.

I added the tach, i use it to judge gas milage on how well the car is performing.

A good question is, how high does your tach go?
My SVT goes up to 6, but my old Focus went up to 6, my buddies S2000 goes up to like 9K! And a RX-8 goes to like 12!

I found online a neat diagnostics screen where if you do a bunch of things you can get a digital tach and spedo where my milage LCD is, I need to play with that one day.
