I know how pavement cracks and sinkholes form from freeze/thaw in the winter and simple wear and tear in warmer months.

What I don’t know is how pavement buckles UPWARD????

There are a few main roads near me where the street has buckled upward into almost a speed bump on a 45mph street! And its happened repeatedly. They’ve even chopped and repaved it but it still comes back in different areas.

Some are near hilly areas but some are on flat land. How does this happen??? Cheap concrete??

The Heat Makes Pavements expand. There is no place for the pavement to go, so it goes up.

The soil under the pavement acts like a sponge – absorbing rainwater. Because of this the ground is constantly shifting, and like hpdog said sometimes the only way for the pavement to go is up. This is why sidewalks and driveways have those lines in them, to try and prevent cracks and uneven buckling by relieving the pressure

It does the same thing to train rails, that’s why people have jobs of removing & adding parts of the track every couple months.
