    We’re getting a SONIC DRIVE-IN

Yep, that’s right. I was driving into Middleton today and I noticed that Rusty’s Restaurant on University Avenue has been torn down and new construction has been started. There is a sign up front that reads “coming soon, SONIC!!!!!”

To my knowledge, this will be the first Sonic in southcentral Wisconsin. Anyone know of any other Sonic’s in Wisconsin?

Further info – This SONIC DRIVE-IN is scheduled to open January 2009, and it will be very first SONIC DRIVE-IN in Wisconsin.

I heard that weeks ago and was thrilled at the news! I’ve never eaten at one, but love their commercials and can’t wait to try it out.

I was surprised Rusty’s closed down though, I always thought that was a popular place to be.

I’d like to see more of these restaurants on the east side… I suppose in time I will.

Our reality is that most of the “popular” restaurants are on the east side. We wish that we had a better selection on the west side of town. icon_scratch.gif

For example, my wife loves Red Lobster and the Texas Road House and we don’t have either on the West Side.

Seriously, I wonder if SONIC might be interested in a cruise night next year? This location is pretty close to the QSL though.

Marshall ~ you do have a point with Red Lobster and Texas Roadhouse, both excellent places to eat, but you have to be early (or patient) or forget about it, especially on a weekend night.

What happened to the Red Lobster on your side of town? Remember the Mountain Jack’s of years past? That was a good place to eat!

Red Lobster became Smokey Bones, a beef place. I am told that the same holding company owns both Red Lobster and Smokey Bones franchises. Smokey Bones is in the old Red Lobster location at WestTowne, but I don’t know if it is successful or not.

I ate at a Sonic quite a few years ago when I was in Oklahoma. I don’t really remember how the food was, but they are very popular out that way.

I didn’t even know Rusty’s closed, where am I gonna get a .25 Old Style tap beer now?! Every time I go there I remember the story my dad told me about his trip to Rusty’s when he was in college… jumpy.gif

Rusty’s was suppose to close about two years ago last I heard but stayed open. Maybe that buyer then fell threw.

It is too bad it has closed. Great place, good times for a few generations.

This is great news. I really miss the grape slushes from Sonic. Their food is decent, good hot dogs. Never really had much else from Sonic. I don’t recall them ever having a cruise in at any of the Texas Sonics, but we can always approach them right? It sounds like a perfect idea, with the old time drive in feel. Heck the ones in Texas even had car hops on roller skates.

Now we just need a Whataburger and I will be happy.

A gas station was supposed to go in there but had trouble getting a permit for the tanks.

You could probably run a car on the warm, green, .25 cent Old Style taps they served there!

I am also looking forward to this one opening. It is only a mile or so from where I work, and I have a weakness for Coney Dogs!!!!
