Hi guys,
I’m probaby going to swap out all my tyres for performance ones. I’ve got a couple of Michelin Energy tyres on the front (my car is FWD) that are nearly gone. They’re just within UK legal limits. The rear ones (a matched-up Bridgestone and Goodyear) are probably good for the rest of the life of the car. The spare is a Michelin Energy, not sure about the condition aside from the fact that it is definitely legal.
I was thinking about swapping the Goodyear to the spare (as the Goodyear is an Eagle NCT5 and is a good tyre), keeping the Bridgestone spare as a loose tyre and disposing of the three Michelins.
Trouble is, what to choose? Now, my Almera is heavy and that 1.5l engine isn’t ever going to provide anything remotely decent in terms of power. However, the chassis is exceedingly stiff and the suspension is also very stiff (as in, “sports” suspension as standard). My car, according to a professional racing driver, “corners like a housefly”. This has saved my life before – I jumped from one lane to another at 70-80mph in less than one car length and with a little hip-wiggle my car righted itself and it’s brown-trousered owner. Otherwise, I certainly wouldn’t be writing this post right now.
Moreover, my car began to aquaplane today on the M4. Time to sort this out.
So, long journeys ahead. Safety, for me, is paramount. My question is this.
What tyres, available in the UK, give the very best grip to wear ratio?
Any suggestions would, as always, be most greatly appeciated.
