What do you think is an appropriate number of classes/awards to cars for a show? If you give too many awards, almost every car will get an award. What do you think is fair? I was thinking something like 1 in 10 or 1 in 5 if possible

Does it seem fair that that award is tied to a carny van???? Hmmmmmmm? I am starting to think yes on that. So, have a clause that a vehicle has to reach a certain number of points to be first considered for an award, and then awards can be distributed from there?
July 21, 2009 at 4:25 am #34998GaribaldiKeymasterIt seems to me that would be the fairest thing to do – have a points cutoff and cars that meet the cutoff get the award. If there end up being extra trophies from other classes, then a class with more than 3 cars over said point cutoff could get awards.
As far as how many awards per class – I can see both sides. I think, however, if you did a points system like that it would be okay to give more than 3 in a class in extenuating circumstances like a class that is much larger than originally planned for (and larger relative to the other classes at the show). In this case, you can’t change the class because the cars are already in it but you can give more awards to it (if available) to recognize more cars in that larger class

You get 10 cars in a class, 3 drive away with awards.I like the “best of class” format with awards over the 1st, 2nd, 3rd place. This helps keep some mystery to the judging results in classes. And if your award just says Best of Class, they can be moved around for larger classes where 4 or 5 awards are given. Giving more than 5 awards per class is overkill.
Participant judging should be outlawed, its nothing more than a popularity contest. Cars that don’t deserve an award take hardware home over cars that do deserve recognition.
This may be your best statement ever. Nice work
I personally like moparkid25’s bashing of Madison liberals as some of his “best” (or at least most entertaining) statements, but I can agree with this position…

What should a show do if they can’t get people to judge? If they shouldn’t turn to participant, what would be a good solution?

I would say that if the show isn’t judges by a group of judges, it should go to being a non-judged show.
July 23, 2009 at 10:33 pm #35067circletrackParticipantIt’s almost impossible to make everyone happy and while I’ve seen some participant judged shows turn into a popularity contest, I’ve also seen some really good cars win at shows like that. Not every show has enough people to judge (or want to judge), and I’d rather see participant judging vs. dragging some kid off the street who judges his buddies car and walks away with an award…

If no one wants to judge, or you can’t find them, then you are stuck with participant judging.
I’m just not a fan of it because in most cases it is a popularity contest.
July 24, 2009 at 12:24 pm #34908XmanParticipantMaybe these car show producers should go to some quality car shows, and see how they are run. I feel some of them are in it just to raise money for whatever there current interest is this week. Some of them better learn that without the cars, there will be no show. Maybe a little advanced planning to get judges lined up ahead of time would help.
On the other hand with biased or spectator judging anyone can win:laugh:
July 24, 2009 at 12:40 pm #35071moparkid25ParticipantOne thing I have noticed at a few shows where Participant judging is present is that when they give you your ballot, they write your car number on it. This keeps you from voting for your own car, not that any of us here would do that, but I know a few people who would.
A lot of the shows put on by the Chicagoland Mopar Club are participant judged. The last time I went to Belvidere (2007 I think), all the award winners were club members wearing Event Staff shirts…
I’m just as guilty of voting for my friends cars during a PJ show.
