When I purchased my Beetle 3 years ago it had a pancake chrome filter on it. This past spring I picked up a new one, but it got me to thinking. What was so bad about the stock oil bath?
So I searched a bit and came up with the following article:

It seems the stocker actually has a velocity stack in it (which helps to smooth the air flow out) and a very unique way to help heat the air on cold starts.
So the search was on for a smaller oil bath. So i found a decent one off of a 62, for 20 bucks shipped.

I masked off the orange print and a couple of other parts de-greased it and then shot it with a couple coats of black paint.

Then it was time for the install.

While I was in there I ripped out the old air cleaner and the heater tubes and bought the correct kit with all the correct pieces for the heater tubes:

I also have the the pre-heater tube from the oil bath, but I still need to drill a 1.25″ through the breast plate (and I still need to order the correct rubber gromit). Where does the hose go to you may ask?
Well there is small collector that mounts onto one of the exhaust bolts that collects hot air from the cylinders:

I have installed it and I’m still thinking about drilling that hole.
No carb adjustments needed yet. The seat of the pants tells me it is has a slower throttle response, but I may yield better MPG (I’m going to run part of the Hot Rod Power tour next week so I will see if my MPG improves from the current 34 on the highway).
