It was weird – not only did I get the initial thump and rush of air away from it, but almost right afterwards there was a huge rush of air towards the explosion, chasing up a massive mushroom cloud. At the time, I never expected that rush of air towards it, but it’s obvious why that happened.

the explosion created a vacuum and air rushed in to fill it?

Yep. It was a fuel-air explosion. Firstly, the initial explosion caused a pulse of high pressure that pushed air out away from the epicentre of the explosion at great speed. Then the air rushed in to fill the vacuum it had created, and I assume that air was also rushing towards it because there was a mushroom cloud of fire heading upwards.

I’ve never felt such an incredible thump before. I didn’t just feel it in my chest, but throughout my body, even in my eyes.
