I work for a family owned business that employs less than 50 people…I like it. Pay may not be too great, but the people running it are decent.

I would rather work for a smaller business but unfortunatley in my field most of the jobs are in larger companies.

    Small business all the way.

I’ve worked in my family business since 18. I did try a stint at a large dealership during high school and it was the worst. Just a number, punching in and out and slogging threw the day it felt like.

We have no employees, if your there, your part owner and it is just family. I like the freedom, close up, open up, stay late, whatever. I can do as I please.

In depends on the business and the position.

In the bar business, I would rather work for a larger, multi-location business. They seem to be better run with less “the family comes first” attitudes. Small “family” bars also tend to not obey all of the laws, allow drinking by employees, run out of stock, not be as clean, because they fly under the radar of the law.

In production work, I would rather work for a smaller family run business. They pay better, often supply better benefits, and honestly appreciate the employees more, but you work more hours.

I too like the smaller company where you are not a number.

I have been fortunate in my career to work for a small company (100 worldwide) which grew to a medium company (1000 worldwide) over about 6 years. But when the market got soft, so did our stock and another company came in bought us out and shut-us down. Fortunately, me losing my job almost 5 years ago has actually helped me move on and up in my career (and it has allowed me to hire 4 of those former employees who now work for me).

I too have to agree that small business is the way to go. Like lilwille, I worked for a large dealership in Madison when I was in high school. Nobobdy knew who you were unless they read your name off your shirt. Too many chiefs and not enough indians. I’ve been with my present employer for 10 years now and he is a great boss. I really can’t imagine taking orders from anyone other than him. We have approx. 25 people that work here.

I also like running my shop at home. I’m the owner, supervisor, employee, and customer relations specialist :P
