I have a 1995 Toyota Corolla which has been stalling at idle in drive. I have replaced several parts trying to chase down the problem, they include:Full tune up, catalytic converter, fuel filter, injectors cleaned, timing belt changed and timing checked.

    The symptoms are:
Will run great until warm, then you feel it start to miss. The motor then will stall when in drive at idle or if you are deriving slowly. There are no error lights on and when put on the diagnosis machine it shows no problems. Does anyone have any idea of what it could be?? EGR valvle??

    Thanks

Egr is a possibility. It should be fully closed at low speeds. Mixing exhaust gas in at low speeds could cause this problem. I would check the plugs right after it dies to see if any are wet. If one or more are, it could be an leaky injector(s) problem and the computer trying to compenate. A fuel pressure test may show something, too high, too low. If this problem came on after a fill up, it may just be some bad gas. There were big problems with injectors around Milwaukee last year that were traced to bad gas.

    Thanks Steve,
I will try all your ideas and see if I can pinpoint the problem. I appreciate the advice. I will post what I find out.

    Mr. Studebaker

Did you get that fixed yet?

    Mr Studebaker,

Some Nissans have this issue (I know – I was in one that did). It might be the same as your problem. It was the MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow) at fault.

I’ve never heard of an auto stalling – the one I saw was a manual. It would just stall at idle, even with the clutch down or in neutral.

So, if you can, check out your sensors.

    Best of luck!

I’d check the EGR and look for vacuum leaks. Vacuum leaks seem to be an overloked item on many old cars. Chances are that you have more than one, and you may have devices that use vacuum leaking as well (it’s not just the hoses that can leak). You reall yneed a vacuum pump, complete with gauge to do any testing (like the MityVac).

I know you’re out there somewhere
    Somewhere, somewhere
    I know I’ll find you somehow… :haha:

I talked to him and he did get the problem resolved. Maybe the next time he’s on he’ll let us know what was wrong

Did he ever figure out the problem?

Yes he did, I’m trying to remember what it turned out to be… Oh that’s right, it was a bad ignition coil
