What is this attraction to being on the ice, whether it is for ice fishing or skating or whatever? I used to go ice fishing but after many times buying minnows, driving to the lake, and when I get there saying to myself ‘do I really want to go sit on that ice’ I realized maybe I shouldn’t waste my time or money anymore.

Don’t these people understand that just because there is ice on a body of water that it may not be safe?

Ice fishing has never interested me, nor has fishing in general. I used to do it when I was a kid, I would ride my bike to Stewart Lake and spend the afternoons there. Did more exploring in the woods than I did fishing though…

The other factor is that I can’t swim  I don’t like being on the water, frozen or not.

I kind of always thought the lakes being frozen over was Natures way of saying “They are f&*king CLOSED!” and to just stay away.

I can recall a story passed along from the old guys about someone who went Ice Fishing at Gov. Dodge. They went out, drilled a hole and nothing…..they reached down…nothing. Then they shined a flashlight and there was about a 10 foot space between the ice and what was left of the water.

That one always stuck in my head. I don’t know if it happened, or even if it is possible. But I’d rather not be the guy to find out.

That does happen on rivers. I was on the Wisconsin River neart the dells and I fell through. I thought I was a goner, but all I did was hit the old ice about a foot deeper. I was about 12 years old and I never went on the ice ever again. i felt that was God telling me “The next time you walk on the ice, yer gettin’ wet”.
