Looking for information and input on how to best (legally) get a car back to Wisconsin from the Mecum auction.

Allowing for the fact that any car that I purchase would be roadworthy, is it legal to drive a car out of Illinois and into Wisconsin, without plates on the car? Obviously, I would have a bill of sale and/or a transferred title from the seller, if I were to be stopped by law enforcement.
Also, I asume that I could contact my current collector car insurer, Hagerty, and add this new car to my policy and actually have coverage on the car in case of a mishap.

Or, will I need to have the car trailered into Wisconsin, and physically go to my local DOT office, and deal with them, in person?

If I remember correctly, you have 72 hiurs from the date of purchase to register a vehicle. If you drive it home, as long as you have the title you should be fine.

Definately call your insurance company before driving it. Hagerty may even have a rep on site that can get you a temporary insurance card.

    Good luck!!

I’ve purchased 2 cars in IL before and Zac is correct. you just need a Bill of Sale and you are fine to drive it back home.
