Most cars now come with a clearcoat finish, which tricks owners into thinking they don’t need wax. Actually, you should wax your car 3-4 times a year. Most manufacturers also recommend washing your car once a week. Remember to start washing your car only when the car’s surface is cool and only after rinsing the entire car. Rub gently, one section at a time, and use specific car wash products–never household cleaners. After rinsing your car well, dry it with a soft, clean cloth.

I’ve never waxed my clearcoat vehicles and they look great!

I only wash my vehicles with Palmolive dishwashing liquid. I
won’t use anything else. It does a great job and I never have any
    kind of paint/finish problems.

NEVER use Murphy’s Oil Soap because it leaves a crappy
    residue on the paint.

Wax protects the paintwork. In time, the coatings will be removed and oxidation will turn the paint slightly “milky”. If you’ve had your car a few years and haven’t waxed it, try it. It’ll only take half an hour, and I guarantee that you’ll see a difference.

As well as that, wax repels water. It just can’t settle on your car. This means that your paintwork is always protected, no matter what the conditions are.

hpdog – I wash and wax my car once a week (see my recent thread) with two coats. Normally, when I’m busy at univeristy or working, it gets washed and waxed every couple of weeks at the most. I’ve never used just a polish before, only Turtlewax (which is a polish and wax).

Good advice Cobra, washing and waxing are two important tasks that you can do to keep your paint and car looking great – like you said it doesn’t take a ton of time and it really is worth it! icon_cheesygrin.gif

I would have to disagree imo on using the dishwashing soap to wash your car. 90% of those detergents have products in them to help cut grease and everything else.. imagine that cutting into your paint. One of my neighbors washed his maroon car with dawn and well needless to say one day it was shiny the next he had paint rubbing off on his mitt and the bottom of the mitt almost matched the car color so just be careful. icon_surprised.gif
