Do you think we’ll ever go to autopiloted cars? I could see the POTENTIAL for it to happen with a combination of robotics, gps, and wifi style networking for programming routes. Plus auto sensors for collision detection and the like.
But I don’t think we’ll ever lose the urge to do the driving ourselves.
The movie MINORITY REPORT was crazy. It showed a fully automated driving system in like only thirty years. First of all I don’t think a city wide system like that is feasible in that short of a time frame. Also I don’t think the public at large would be ready to just give up driving.
I mean what about the saying “freedom of the open road”??? Thats a big part of driving is being in control yourself. Sure you have traffic laws to obey but aside from having enough gas in the tank you can go anywhere anytime, anyway – within reason of course (but you can always do the “slightly above the limit” driving).
I just think we’re all too independently minded to ever fully go to a automated driving system. Now a automated public transit service would be feasible and possible with dedicated routes and fixed vehicles.
