Idiots!!
June 2, 2009 at 9:55 pm #34578jonmandudeParticipantIdiots doesn’t cover it. They (both driver and passenger) should never be allowed near a car again.
Of subject a little, where would the harassment of people for their exhausts and tint change anything. This car seems showroom stock.
Additionally, in the article it talks about the growing number of high speed accidents and how enforcement is important. I honestly wonder how many of these accidents could be prevented with more intelligent enforcement. Harassing creates less respect for the police. Pursuing speeders just pushes the speeds higher in many of these incidents.
There has to be other options than high speed pursuits, and better preventative ways besides harassment. Maybe getting a license number and simply going to the persons’ house to wait for them? Maybe more strict penalties when caught speeding. It has been shown time and time again that suspending a license does nothing but create a situation where a person continues to drive and when caught runs.
I know that the police have a job to do and do it very well, but the tactics they use sometimes backfire with catastrophic results. There has to be a better way.
How about technology? Can we put chips in some of these newer cars that report this abuse of speed and shut the car down to wait for police?
June 2, 2009 at 11:54 pm #34585GTO ManModeratorI think that may be a good idea about a chip of some kind indicating reckless driving. Insurance companies are doing something like that with teen drivers.

What kind of car was this young driver piloting and was he actually doing 160 MPH, and where on 18/151? Is it possible that the video was photoshopped to make it look like the speedometer was just registering 160MPH?
Also, can someone chime in and give me a quick education on Nitrous Oxide and how it is used to increase speed? Specifically, is it liquid or gas in the bottle and when it is in injected (?) into an internal combustion motor, is it still liquid or gas. I assume that because of pressure and compression, that stainless steel braided lines are necessary?

June 3, 2009 at 2:03 am #34593Amigo2kModerator2001 S4 Audi… looks like it has 105k on it with a check engine light on; v6 twin turbo 250HP;
used 2000-2002 with ~100k on it go for 7-10k.
There is one sign i can see in the video that looks like it says 151 14 on it (article says near Verona. 151 goes around verona and the road isn’t built for 160 mph…

These kids were doing this just west of Verona by Dairy Ridge Rd. The road is straight with one small incline going under County rd G. I’m guilty of doing an excess of 100+ mph in that area, but I didn’t videotape it and incriminate myself on Youtube either.
AMFAM has a insurance program for young drivers where they have a camera installed to monitor the driver’s actions. We’ve installed a few in our body shop. A brother to a guy I know had one in his car, but after it recorded his girlfriend hanging out the t-top while the vehicle was in motion, his camaro is now for sale
June 3, 2009 at 6:07 am #34596GaribaldiKeymasterI wonder what the car looked like after the crash?

I will try. Nitrous Oxide is a liquid that quickly converts to gas cooling as it does. It is injected into the intake. It can be injected into the air intake or with the gas into the intake manifold. On carberated cars it is often injected via a plate under the carb. What NOS does is cool the fuel air mixture allowing for more to be packed into the combustion chamber. More air/fuel means more power. It adds plenty of torque, but has some dangers as well. If the car is not pulling enough air/fuel the NOS can cause a backfire in the intake. That is why most NOS kits are set to operate only at WOT.
June 3, 2009 at 4:04 pm #34599Eclipse_TunerParticipantAnd yes, since the nitrous system is pressurized, braided lines and AN fittings are necessary. Most systems also have a time limiter switch that kills after 10 seconds or so, as sustained use of Nitrous can overheat engine components since more A/F is being burned.
And yes, those kids are retarded and should be locked up, and never touch a car again.
I also agree that law enforcement should look into other tactics/means of high speed deterants.
June 4, 2009 at 1:45 am #34601jonmandudeParticipantNot only tactics in high speed pursuits, but tactics towards auto enthusiasts in general. I would love to see an effort of understanding the hobby and working with those of us that enjoy the hobby to weed out the bad eggs. To me the actions by police seem to be “nail everybody with a nice car for anything we can get them for and troublemakers will be stopped” with no regard for those of us that simply enjoy the hobby and cause no real trouble. I believe that most of us do not support unsafe street racing and support the police in enforcing this foolish activity. That is never in question. Why can’t the police work with us in the hobby rather than attack the hobby as a whole? This next weekend would be a good time to send an olive branch.
