After our Arctic Ocean tour we headed back to the hotel to pack up to head south. We spent the night at a BLM campsite where the tundra and the Brooks Mountain Range meet. It was 100 miles above the Arctic Circle. Friday morning we headed into the Brooks Range and over Atigun Pass once again. We stopped at the community of Wiseman. No one around. We stopped at Coldfoot for lunch and the Hotspot Cafe for a milk shake. Then reached the end of the Dalton Highway with zero issues! Pictures do not do the scenery justice. Every few minutes I kept saying Wow Wow Wow!

September 20, 2017 at 4:41 pm #8247978cruisingwagonParticipantThe old saying pictures don’t do it justice certainly applies! You have to be there to get the whole scope of the landscape. Weather for the most part was good. It did get wetter and cooler later in the trip. As far as distance between gas stations,on the Alaska Highway Mostly 40 to 50 miles between stations. When we got to about 1/2 tank we filled up. Gas price in Alaska was 2.80- 3.00 in the cities, slightly more in rural areas . On the Dalton Highway it was 5.50 to 4.77. In Canada 4.50 to 5.00, but in one remote spot I paid over 8.00! The longest between stations was on the Dalton Highway. From Coldfoot to Deadhorse it is 240 miles with absolutely no services of any kind.

July 2nd
Heading into Denali National Park for an all day bus tour.
July 3rd
Our first really wet night, and day. Our flight around Denali was cancelled, tent got wet, and clouds hid the mountains. We made it to Anchorage though. Got a tent site with electric. Ran small electric heater, and everything in dryer and cozy. Tomorrow morning is the first of two Fourth if July parades we were invited to take part in. First one is is Anchorage. Will post pics tomorrow. Checked the weather and there is an official weather alert, ” Warning , the rest of the week will be unusually warm and dry ” warm reaching 70 degess and no rain forecast.

Had a GREAT DAY at both the Anchorage and Chugiak 4th of July Parades!! Anchorage parade was in downtown Anchorage with thousands of people lining the streets. Chugiak was along a 3 mile stretch of rural old Glenn Highway. We got lots of Pinto Love at both. Following us was a model T with a Calliope. After the parade we were invited to a cook out by Tom and Marcy , of the Alaska Antique Auto Mushers , at their home. Great fun, Great People!!

Traveling south on the Seward Highway Turnagain Arm!
So we are stopped at a pull out in Alaska, a guy walks up to me and asked if I was in Dearborn with the Pinto Stampede s few years ago!! Turns out he works for Ford, his name in John.
After making to the most northerly driving point in North America, yesterday we made it to the most Westerly driving point in North America. Then to the Western terminus of the North America highway system, the Homer Alaska Spit, where we camped out on the beach!

Sunshine! Today at the Wasilla Centennial Car Show!
After the car show we went to Palmer and learned about depression era gov program to bring farmers from Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin to farm Alaska. Then up the Glenn Highway. We got a great deal on a small cabin at an old resort a couple is trying to bring back to life. It is near Glenallen Alaska.

Mostly cloudy day driving the Tok Cutoff to Tok. Started raining, we were tired, so we got a room. At the motel an Alaskan dog musher , Hugh Neff, gave a talk about dog mushing. This is one of his new pups!
