I plan to buy a few DVD’s to get the family through another long, cold Wisconsin winter.

What movies or films from the past 5 years or so would you recommend that are worth owning and watching over again?

I will start with my personal favorite: Schindler’s List

My favorite holiday movie: National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

This isn’t going to answer your question, but I have one for you.

    Do you have Netflix?

Over the next 5-10 years, DVDs will be phased out and you’ll be able to order up on-demand movies, online and pipe them into your TV.

Netflixs already has 12,000 movies and TV shows you can watch online (unlimited). I can hook my laptop up to my TV for DVD quality movies. Several of the new blueray players have this function too. That is you plug them into your modem and you can download a movie from Netflixs. That means the manufactures know it is coming, and it is only a mater of time before DVD’s (even blueray) die.

    Prices:

And you can get traditional DVDs from Netflix’s too.
You may want to pick a larger package, say 3 movies out at once for a month and then go to smaller package (in the spring), or cancel it. I have the 2 movies per month deal. Costs me $5.26. No gas to burn going to blockbuster, and I can look up and watch the preview online before i put it in my cue…

Netflix has a distribution center in Madison. Typically, if I drop a DVD in the mail to ship back I have my next one 2 days later (drop in the mailbox Monday and Wednesday I have my replacement).

Once you set up an account you can set up a cue of the flixs you want, in the order you want them.

It might be a nice gift for the whole Family (gather around the Computer and let everyone Pick a favorite movie…).

I would highly recommend The Dark Knight. I thought the acting all around was excellent and the characters really had depth. In addition, Casino Royale, The Departed, and Live Free or Die Hard were also excellent

I have to agree, The Dark Knight was the best movie I have seen in a long time! I’m also biased because I have always admired Batman – from being a young kid with a Super Powers lunchbox, to collecting many Batman comics, seeing the first Micheal Keaton Batman movie in the theatre when I was 8 (I still remember going!), to the last two movies which I felt were the most accurate to the comic and the best two produced.

I also liked Iron Man, another one that stuck mostly to the original story line.

I like alot of older stuff. Movies I would also recommend would be:

    American Graffiti

    Dazed and Confused

    Grandma’s Boy

    Knocked Up

    F&F: Tokyo Drift

    Hollywood Knights

    Smokey and the Bandit

    Starsky & Hutch

    Dark Blue

    The American Pie trilogy

It also never hurts to pick up a season of your favorite tv shows on DVD either. I have the complete Dukes of Hazzard series on DVD, All the Knight Rider seasons, and seasons 1-3 of Starsky and Hutch. There always good to fall back on when your looking for some good tv. I also just ordered the first 5 seasons of CSI: Miami to keep me content this winter!

    Thanks for the great responses!

I had totally forgotten about the NetFlix possibility.

Several of my co-workers have recommended The Dark Knight.

With 4-10″ of snow coming for Tuesday and Wednesday, I need to get the family ready to “dig in”.

If you have kidlets, Some of the recent CGI movies are quite entertaining.
    Ratatoullie
    Wall.E
    Cars (of course)
That movie about surfer penguins which I can’t remember the name of.
