What’s the locals opinion of what to expect at the Autofest show?
Bunch of trailer-queens/ unique cars that don’t come out very often, or a collection of cars that I can see at any number of normal weekend car shows this summer?? Not opposed to the admission fee if the cars warrant it… if its 100 cars that aren’t anything different than ones I can see at a “free” show that has 1000+ cars, maybe not so much.Opinions??
Gonna be in Madison on Saturday regardless, may drop by and check it out.
Blown69RSParticipantthanks for the comments….
video was shot with my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3)…. certainly nothing special.
the mount is linked and pictured below…. suction mount to the windshield.
I modified it a little due to the pivot arm being visible in the shot.
I was surprised how stable the video looked at first..almost fake looking.
unbelievable that I didn’t meet any traffic on that stretch.. I have a 2nd part that I passed ONE car.
probably a good thing, not sure how well I was keeping in my lane on some of the turns.. :whistle:here’s what I used for the camera mount: (link below)

Brought a friend with me…. he scored on his 1st try…Award or none… wouldn’t matter. Cooperative car, and I’ll be back.
We talked to Vicky (sp?) for a while on Friday, Jim on Saturday…. and another very nice guy who was a founder of the show (he BS’ ed with us for what must’ve been almost an hour at the park on Friday)… unbelievable how nice everyone is to us at the show. You guys should never take that show or group of people for granted… they are a rare exception to how a lot of organizers are.. Maybe there are some issues that aren’t perfect, but they appear to genuinely care and try to do the right thing. Exceptional show, people, cars, etc…

Thanks much…
The camera is a little point’n’shoot Panasonic Lumix (DMC-FH27). 16meg sensor, decent optical zoom… nothing really all that fancy. Takes almost nothing to figure it out… at least for your normal photos. I’ve never used probably 90% of what its capable of doing. Its 2 (maybe even 3) years old now.The current equivalent replacement model is around $350, but has a bunch of non-needed price raising features like wifi, etc… I’ll hold onto this one till it poops out on me…

Blown69RSParticipantBlue55Chevy,,, here’s some more photos….
Hopefully this works…. doing it by mobile, so its 50/50…

Dave is a very good friend of mine… without giving away anything “too personal”, Dave is trying to cutback some this season due to some health issues over the winter. He’s still out doing his unbelievable schedule, that would exhaust most anyone else.. it just so happened that that holiday weekend was one where he could cut a very long distance show for himself (and do something closer to home), so he chose to not participate. It was not a late change,, 3D had chose to not do that show before any flyers had ever been printed. There’s nothing else that should be read into that… it wasn’t costs, and it wasn’t anyone’s choice, other than Dave and his family. I saw Dave just this past weekend, and he looked excellent. I wish he’d cut his schedule just a little bit more… I don’t know how he keeps up with all the stuff he has going.
Blown69RSParticipantZac..Doing Dubuque again huh??…. good deal..

I agree….I also like reading some of the show reviews for some excellent humor…
Can’t believe the “debate” hasn’t taken off yet on this one….

I use these on mine for last 6-7 years.
Think I have “Taylor” brand.There are 2 different styles….
1 is for assembling your own wires, they go on first and have a smaller opening that will not clear the boots.
The other has larger openings, and are made to slide over pre-assembled wires.
Blown69RSParticipantGreedy unaccountable Iowa politicians…… coming from an Iowan..
Good move Dana Mecum….!!!
Don’t let them change their minds either when they realize how much revenue they’re losing…
Find a more appreciative venue.
Good luck to ’em.Blown69RSParticipantI let my Goodguys membership expire this year. All my experiences have been limited to the DesMoines show. I’ll be the first to admit, they DO have an excellant turnout of very nice cars, and a large non-owner spectator base. If you’ve never attended the DesMoines event, I would definitely encourage everyone to go at least once (on Friday or Saturday). Yes, its usually miserable hot…but, there are many, many large indoor facilities that are fully air-conditioned. The Iowa fairgrounds may be one of the top 3 scenic locations for a GG show, period.
Now, the negatives which I’m sure a lot of you already know… Goodguys membership required (in “most” cases…more on this later), to participate in the show. So, there’s anywhere from $45-$75 to start. Add to that the cost of entering your car… it can very easily turn into $100 to enter. You go in to it knowing that though, so really no complaints. What finally got to me was: $18 admission for spectators. If you have friends and family that may want to attend to see you, some were shocked at the price. When GG management changed hands from father to son, the business “profit margin” mentality took over. It was $15 for years, now its $18. The final straw….and “New” car guys this is NOT a shot at your vehicles… when they opened the Sunday portion of the event to everyone, regardless of year…that was enough. Why? Where all the original owners forked out $75-$100 for entry and mandatory membership dues, the new cars were offered the Sunday-only participation option without joining GG for a flat $35 entry.
I can attend any number of events in this general area that have 800-1500 cars, most for $20 or less, and almost all with zero spectator admission fee. I can’t see a reason why Goodguys events are even truly needed.
If Oshkosh wants the event, more power to ’em. Yes, I’d possibly be a hypocrite and attend… Memorial Day weekend would be ideal (at least in my area), because there’s very little going on for competition for car shows.
But, there’s reasons it failed in Joliet and Madison…. I doubt those situations would be any different in Oshkosh. I’d give it 2 years before they oulled out…
Blown69RSParticipantZac…
Theres been a ton of debate (and argument…) on many forums about whether or not American Family and State Farm truly offer “Agreed Upon Value Coverage”… (appraisal or not), without trying to implement depreciation percentages when trying to collect an a damage claim. This is strictly concerning Collector car coverage….Just be sure you’re getting exactly what you think when going with their coverage. Just trying to pass along concerns (and regrets) of other guys I’ve heard stories from over the years. If you’re comfortable with what the agent has told you, thats what matters most. Hopefully you’ll never need to make a claim anyways.
See ya around this summer probably somewhere…. have a good weekend,
RussBlown69RSParticipantNah…. just bored waiting for good weather.
