October 9, 2006 at 10:53 pm in reply to: What do you think the future of car shows & the hobby is #27008circletrackParticipantI feel exactly the same at many shows with the newer cars. I did stop and look at the ones at Mayville and was quite surprised on the amount of money the “kids” put into those cars, but it’s what they desire. I also feel if someone has $30K to stick into a car, I’d buy a muscle car first, but not everyone agrees. I’ll never forget driving our 68 SS Nova a few years back near the high school and the kids walking nearby yelled wondering what on earth we were driving. Very sad, but true! Many of the cars at shows today were around long before they were even born ~ or thought of! icon_cheesygrin.gif
circletrackParticipantDid you notice the restrooms right next to the road above the show field?
circletrackParticipantSpecific Ratings (A-F):A
Arrival/Departure (easy to find, easy to leave?) – C ~ Thank goodness one of our members called to tell us where to go, otherwise it would’ve been very hard to find the park if you are not familiar with Mayville.
Parking Location – A ~ Nice clean park
Class Organization – A ~Participant judging
Trophies & Prizes – B ~ Very nice trophies. The door prizes were lacking as they were all in Mayville, and again if you don’t live there, you won’t use them.
Food – A ~ Excellent selection! We had the turkey sandwhiches and cream puffs, both very good!
Entertainment – B ~ The DJ did a nice job, hard to hear at times.
Judging – N/A ~ Participant
Dash Plaque – A ~ Nice magnet
Variety of Cars – A ~ Nice cars I don’t see very often.
Bathrooms – A ~ Plenty!
Weather – A ~ Perfect!
Trophy Presentation Timing – A ~ On time and fairly quickly
Entry Fee – B ~ $10, which is average
Overall Rating:B We’ve never been to this show before and would recommend it. Audobon Days has something for everyone.circletrackParticipantHave they offered to move the day at all? I know many want them to, but not sure if they want back to back events? I’m also thinking judging from the traffic heading that direction every night, it would be challenging to get to before 6-7?
circletrackParticipantMarshall ~ Excellent points! I’ve asked for the judging sheet at a couple shows and have been told I can’t have it back, no idea why. I would also like to find out what I need to work on, but then again what one person likes another may not care for. It’s all in the judging.
In regards to trophies, some friends have offered their to the Boy Scouts, Special Olympics, etc. and they will not accept them. I’d think some of these trophies surely could be used again, just put a different top on?
circletrackParticipant1. Would you attend a Car Show which didn’t have Trophies or other awards.?
Answer: yes, many times2. Would you attend a Car Show which didn’t have Dash Plaques?
Answer: yes, many times3. Would you attend a Car Show which didn’t have food vendors?
Answer: Many shows I bring my own food/beverages, but it’s always nice to have an option as long as the food is good and priced accordingly.4. Would you attend a Car Show which didn’t have Porta Johns?
Answer: No, this is a given.5. Would you attend a Car Show which didn’t have music?
Answer: Music is an important part of any event, why wouldn’t you have music?6. Would you attend a Benefit Car Show, no prizes, awards etc.
Answer: Yes, many times.7. Would you attend a Car Show because you enjoy being around others who have a similiar interest in cars etc. Show your car because you are proud of the results of your hard work putting the car together. Have to bring your own picnic lunch ,get to share time with family and friends and make new friends. Come when you want and leave when you want.
Answer: Again a given, I don’t understand though why some come late to shows, stay a couple hours and leave. I also feel you should be in attendance, if at all possible, to accept an award. I understand things come up, life gets in the way, but if you feel you are deserving, you should stick around. How to make a car show better:
I do think it’s unrealistic to expect people to attend shows without some type of reward, no matter what it may be. If you’ve been to any shows this summer, you can see the bar has been raised very high in some of these classes and people expect recognition for their hard work and effort. I don’t expect an award at every event, but there are some that do and show visible disappointment when their name isn’t called off.
I also think shows should have cut off years. If I want to see a new car, I can stop at the local Ford/Chevrolet dealership to see it. There should also be specific classes for trailered vehicles, with the hopes the owner(s) are honest when registering and putting the car into the correct class. I drove my car over 2000 miles this summer, including to TN and back and it’s disappointing to be in the same class with someone who drives their car on and off the trailer.
My .02!
circletrackParticipantI like it when shows start out with smaller prizes and work up to bigger prizes towards the end of the day. Granted, 99.9% of the time we stay until the very end of the show to support and congratulate the winners. I also go to shows to see friends and enjoy the company of others who enjoy cars as much as I do.
I’m not a fan of gift cards/certificates either, especially if I’m an hour or so from home and most likely won’t get back to that area anytime in the future. I like the idea of gas cards and products we can use for our cars, I can only imagine the amount of wax products we used this year! Cash prizes would be nice. The Dells Area Cruisers entice more people to preregister by giving away money and hotel rooms, this works nicely for them.
circletrackParticipantThe car in the museum is the one that was behind Kennedy, not the actual car he was killed in. They did have swatches from the seat of the car on the wall next to some of the information that had dried blood from the car. The Kennedy display was amazing! I hope to go back this winter and spend more time there.
circletrackParticipantSpecific Ratings (A-F):
Arrival/Departure (easy to find, easy to leave?) – A ~ Easy to find, well marked
Parking Location – A ~ In a field that was MOWED! Looked good
Class Organization – C ~ The classes were too big, they need to work on this
Trophies & Prizes – A ~ The trophies were very cool, a 50/50 raffle that was $280.
Food – B ~ Typical food, it was good.
Entertainment – A ~ I was impressed with the DJ, he wasn’t overly loud, played a good selection and had the speakers up high for everyone.
Judging – N/A
Dash Plaque – N/A
Variety of Cars – A ~ Great! It’s always fun to go away from “home” and see others. I saw some cars today I’ve never seen before and some old favorites.
Bathrooms – A ~ Plenty of porta potties and the buildings also had restrooms.
Weather – A ~ OUTSTANDING!
Trophy Presentation Timing – A~ even earlier than the 4 I heard quoted.
Entry Fee – C ~ Charging $5/person isn’t bad, but they also charged $5 for every spectator. I don’t think it’s fair to charge both, either one or the other.
Overall Rating:B A very good show, the museum was an added bonus, you could spend hours in there! They’ve worked hard on this show and will continue in the future.circletrackParticipantThere is no reason there need to be so many cruise nights on the same night, the Road Apples started with Tuesdays years ago, and yes according to the suggestions here it would be nice to spread things out a bit. I do wonder though if you attend an event Saturday and/or Sunday if you’ll feel like attending multiple events during the week also. One has to find time for family and yardwork somewhere as most work full time jobs to afford our “habits”
Personally, I’ve never liked any events on Sunday nights. If I’m out all day in the heat, the last thing I want is something Sunday night.
circletrackParticipantMy husband and son have been to the Lensing show before and had very good things to say about it. The musuem alone, is worth the trip!
circletrackParticipantLove him! blob1.gif
